Founded in April 2004 in Silicon Valley, the SugarCRM company is a small (around 75 staff at the time of writing) but nimble organization. It has managed to retain an experienced management team with sufficient outside backing. SugarCRM is offered under the Mozilla Public License and the GNU-GPL license and has taken one of the lead positions among the approximately 20 open source CRM applications. It has an advantage that it provides complete access to the underlying source code for clients to control their own direction.

• SugarCRM's open source architecture allows companies to customize, integrate and extend the CRM application with in-house technical resources.
• The open source version is freely downloadable; however, one of the commercial versions may be a better choice for some organizations due to their increased feature sets.
• SugarCRM does provide two commercial products - Sugar Professional and Sugar Enterprise.
• Sugar Professional is a step up from the Sugar Open Source and includes support for sales force automation (SFA), marketing and support. 
• Also available is Sugar Cube, a plug-and-play CRM appliance positioned on the inside of your firewall
• This customer relationship management system includes lead, account and opportunity management.
• Marketing Automation functions include campaign management and email marketing which we can integrate with other marketing for you.
• Customer Support includes case management and incident tracking.
• Reporting is also included.
• This solution can be a great fit for budget conscience organizations in need of some specific features, capable of investing additional time in their CRM product.
