[Wftl-lug] File recovery software

I'm looking for recommendations for file recovery software. Free and
Linux-based (such as on a Live CD) are preferred.
Here's more detail about the situation:
I have (had?) a system with Windows XP on one partition (sda1) and Fedora 7
on another.
Working in Fedora 7, I plugged in a USB external HDD (sdb) and proceeded to
format the disk with
mkfs -t ext3 /dev/sda1
(notice the "a" in sda1 instead of a "b"!!)
After pressing the Enter key, I realize the mistake and press Ctrl-C to
cancel the operation. Too late, though; I can no longer boot into Windows
XP, which contains a few important files.
So, I'm seeking a tool that might help me recover/reconstruct a few key
files that might still remain on the Windows partition (sda1).
Any help and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!
Greg
