Ah yes, you're right about that. I don't recall the distance, and it may
vary by phone company (I think it's something like 1800 feet where I am).
But the signal attentuates the farther away you are from a central office,
and at some point becomes too weak to be useful. This also affects speed,
as I recall.
With fibre, this may cease to be an issue, but if you're in a small town,
they may not lay fibre. In my case, Verizon (phone company) is trying to
compete with Brighthouse (used to be Time Warner, the cable company) to
deliver TV via their fibre. The problem with this, as I understand it, is
that when they bring fibre to your house, they rip out or abandon the
copper. I can see where this could be a problem later.
