yes. I had more or less the same problem... It took a whole day.
What it really did the trick was a combination of Gparted Live CD with
FreeDOS
There is (somewhere) a Gparted Live CD with FreeDOS and then with a few
steps you are up and running.
Once you have the FreeDOS you can install whatever you want.
