Donna, unless you are a fairly sophisticated hardware person, or have
consistent access to someone very close to you who has that skill level, you
might want to consider just buying a box.  The mark up from the vendors
below is not that high, and you would be helping small businesses that offer
really good support in the FOSS community.  For example, both of the
businesses below have had management people donate many hours of time to our
local FOSS public middle school project.  As a simple end user myself, I
personally would not do what you are suggesting, if it were me.  Here are
