Most of this is overkill.  Hi, I'm a lurker here most days to see what's
going on w/Linux

but not a user (after some experimentation.)



The piece above avoids some caveats on things like memory compatibility. 
For this reason

I only look for packages that have cpu motherboard and memory sold as a
bundle.



You can have a system built up fro you by a vendor or do it yourself. 
It's unfortunate

that the DIY mags are no longer published but such as CPU mag and others
often run how-to

articles for scratch builders.

Note that there is also a user rating section where readers provide kudos
and brickbats based on experience.


Power supplies are another thing often oversold.  For Ubuntu many of the
lower powered and efficient ps'es are adequate.


The wisdom from scratch builders is: Get the trailing edge rather than the
leading edge of product because you get four times the value for half the
price.
