I am a big Google fan, but I have to say that Google Picassa is still a
little rough, at least on Linux. It works well for me, and I don't have any
problems, other than it is resource hungry. But it is just not as smooth as
it could be. Your problem is an example. It should default to pull pics
only from your home directory. There is a step in the install process where
you can select which directory that it seeks files from, but it should
default to just your directory. Google, as with the creators of most
similar apps, wants its product to be your app of choice for that function,
and so they get a little bit greedy, and default for the program to be too
aggressive. Linspire Linux does the same thing with Lsongs, for example.
I then ran Picassa2 as user "robert". Besides garbage files (non-pictures)

I accesses them because you have the permissions for the individual files
set to allow anyone to see the files. I know that it appears that you have
the permissions on a given directory set to exclude non-owners, but just out
of curiosity, I would like to see the permissions for a few of the sample
files. I'll bet you will be surprised and you will see that you have given
permissions to user, group, and others to see those individual files.
