You might be interested in the free shells provided by

You can upload your website to it using ssh/scp/sftp ( which can be done
with "Connect to Server" in GNOME, or with   fish:/  ( or is that
two // ? ) with konqueror in KDE - or of course on the command line if
that is your preference.

I've found them to be quite helpful and co-operative - in fact they went
so far as to install GNU screen for me and create a new group "screeners",
which at the time had only one member - me ;)  they run FreeBSD ( i think
they used to run OpenBSD, but that seems to have changed). The only
limitation to the shell is that it is ssh only, and they allow no outgoing
traffic, so you can't, for example, use it as a proxy, or send mail from
it, run an IRC client from it etc. 

Initially they offer 40MB space, but they are open to requests for more.
My somewhat unmaintained ( read: woefully neglected, out of date )  website
is hosted there.

This service may not suit you, but I thought I'd mention it. There are
no ads! :)
