Thanks! I am actually getting ready to travel to Extremadura, Spain, to
attend the Free Software World Conference there, so I don't have time right
now to add much more content or to do much work to promote TuxZine. I do
think that TuxZine can be a great way for newbies here on this list to help
other newbies and to also just record their progress as they learn stuff.
For example, whenever I learn how to do something, I document it on either
the DTP forum or on the wiki page help page:
http://digitaltippingpoint.com/wiki/index.php/Help:Contents
There is a sub-page dedicated just to new users, which can be edited by
anyone:
http://digitaltippingpoint.com/wiki/index.php/How-to_pages
My point here is that if people on this list ARE interested in TuxZine, you
could think of going over there to add content if you figure out how to do
something, and you just want to put your notes up in a public place. That
way, you can bookmark that page, and add to it as you learn more. You also
get the satisfaction of knowing that yes, YOU TOO have now become a wee bit
of a Linux guru. It is really greatly satisfying to see that you have
learned enough to help others. It's a way of giving back to the community.
Of course, there are a million Linux forums where you can post those notes.
I am not pushing TuxZine or the DTP site. The only reason that I put up the
TuxZine page was that this list was talking about how sad it was that Tux
magazine, which Marcel Gagne had helped start, had died, and several members
were talking about putting up a replacement magazine.
Now comes the point where we can appreciate how hard it really is for Marcel
and others like him to maintain a magazine. It takes hours and hours of
relentless work. I am focused on making the Digital Tipping Point film, and
so I won't have lots of time to dedicate to promoting TuxZine and making it
work. If it fails, it fails, but the content can be moved, changed,
tweaked, and be re-born again later in another form in another place.
But the point remains, if TuxZine is to actually happen, it will take lots
of work. It will probably require a decent core of at least 5 people to
make it work. Those 5 people will probably need to spend about 20 hours per
week making it work. And that is probably a minimum. Marcel could probably
tell us how hard it was to start Tux magazine.
