Have you tried Mepis?  Mepis is the only distro that will work on the Dell
Optiplex GX 110 boxes that I have brought to the public middle school that I
support.  Damn Small Linux also works, but then there is that word "Damn" in
front of the kids, which is suboptimal and also the Fluxbox window manager
system is great for gurus but is much harder for newbies.

If you would tell us the specs of that box, maybe we can help you with it.
At any rate, I have put Mepis on boxes with 128 MB of RAM and with 733 MHZ,
but the 128 MB of RAM was painful.  If you have less than 128 MB of RAM, you
will need to explore some other lightweight distros, and unfortunately, I
have yet to find a lightweight distro that is easy for a newbie to install.
Even Damn Small Linux will require you to probably have some help for the
first time that you install it, because the installer is not user-friendly
for a newbie.  Once you get it, it is easy, but there is that learning
curve.
