Michael,
Please understand, I am not trying to engage you in a debate and I
understand that you have your mind made up, but I have to
take-respectful-issue that this is an all problematic thing and Linux is
broken for the desktop.
There are millions using it and many of them are far below your expertise
level.
Yeah, sounds like you have had a comedy of errors here, and you have found
an issue in which you are not the only one struggling. But if you take a
step back, there are known problems with every OS at one time or another
that affect many people with a certain type of hardware. There are many
Vista users waiting to plug their first generation ZUNE player in, along
with popular printers, etc. Heck, every so often an asus momma board hits
the streets and has driver issues with XP. The reason, as you know, is that
motherboards have 90 day production cycles. Sometimes the same model number
will have enough component differences that the same drivers do not work.
That is not a Linux issue, that is just one of the fun perks in the industry
that keeps IT departments all over the world well staffed. ;)
