Christian,

Again, Michael, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, since you have had a bad experience with a Ubuntu distro, let's get you on something that is really really oriented to a simple end user, like MEPIS, and let's run it as a live CD for you. 

But it is not as though I have never run desktop Linuxes (from RedHat 5.2 onward). But until Ubuntu they have all had huge usability issues. 

I am only a "simple" end user in the sense that I prefer my operating systems to at least be able to install. Again: this feisty install fails before I have even had the chance to press one button. I think we can probably exclude complexity in excess of my ability to handle it...
