[Wftl-lug] Anectdotal impressions : the current Ubuntu debate :)

Without mentioning my personal experience with the three Ubuntu versions
being discussed *at some length* here on the WFTL list in the last couple
of days, I offer the following brief observations...

I spend a bit of time on both the #ubuntu irc channel and the ubuntu-users
mailing list. My impressions, for what they are worth, are as follows:

- Most people had/have few problems with Dapper Drake 6.06 LTS (not too
surprising, since stability was a major aim for that release, and it is
"Long Term Support" )

- Edgy Eft 6.10 created far more problems than the current Feisty Fawn
7.04 release appears to be creating - that is, Feisty seems to have a
higher "satisfaction" rating than Edgy, and appears to be creating less
release-specific problems than Edgy.

-I have no figures to back up my wild assertions ;-)

- People's experiences vary with their hardware: for some 7.04 solves
problems, for others it has created new problems.

Ubuntu is on the "cutting edge" with each release, pretty much. After all,
it syncs with Debian Sid (unstable) on a six-monthly basis. This is both a
strength and a weakness, depending on viewpoint. It is a strength in the
sense that newer drivers and features are made available twice a year. It
is a weakness in that there is less time to squash bugs.

Debian Etch ( current stable Debian) is pretty impressive, if you prefer
to be conservative.

Peter
