Yes, of course I meant DOS. But I certainly installed Windows 1.0 the moment 
it came out. (I ran "In-a-vision", a very useable app that predated Corel 
Draw)

It's a vanilla system - the drives that give the issue are in fact older IDE 
drives.

My opinion is more nuanced on that: sometimes one works better, sometimes 
the other. Windows is generally better in drivers.

Yes, and also tried without.

No idea. It's in there, and I do not remember the brand. May have been Dlink 
or some Taiwan brand - no idea.
