I think, from what I see and read, that you are spot on: "Motherboard manufactures are now optimizing their bios for SATA drives as native and "older" PATA drives are being emulated somehow". That is my feeling as well, having seen and read what I have seen and read.
Btw, I have not yet had the chance to try other OSs.

All this problems with hard drive installs seem to be originating with older hard drives not
being properly recognized I don't recall where I read Motherboard manufactures are now
optimizing their bios for SATA drives as native and "older" PATA drives are being emulated
somehow. This causes an untold amount of woe for the kernel developers which must guess
how to account for this situation.
It also seems to be the case that 64 bit systems generally have more stable drivers built into
the bios.
As for distros there are some based on Ubuntu that are very user friendly I really like
Mint Linux which you can get in either USA or worldwide editions the worlwide edition has
all the software that distributions can not legally include in the USA
