Hello Enrique,

The reason you don't get any sound with Ubuntu is
because most sound plugins are disabled by
default in that distro, but if you're able to get
online, Synaptic can get all of the missing files
and you're going to have sound all over the
place. 

I've broadband here and also a router, so in my
case, Ubuntu always finds the connection, but if
no router is present a simple script in a console
will do the trick, how?, you open a console
window (aka a terminal), type: sudo pppoeconf,
hit Enter (if installed Ubuntu will ask for the
user's password), type the user's online info,
hit Enter again, open Firefox, voilà you're
online.

Now, you can open Synaptic and grab the sound
plugins you need. Enjoy.
