It sounds to me like something is eating up your resources.
Unfortunately I don't use Windows XP enough off the top of my head to
point out exactly where you can look, and only my notebook has dual
boot (and I'm on it, so I cannot switch at the moment), but I believe
that if you right click on My Computer, choose Properties, and one of
the tabs off that you'll find a tab that will let you know whether
your system is optimized for the hardware. Sometimes people set up
systems without proper drivers (DOS mode drivers eat resources). You
might also want to have a look at how much is starting up at startup:
msconfig will let you disable some of the applications (i.e.
Realplayer) from starting in the system tray. Try disabling a few less
used ones and see if that frees up some memory.
